Equivalence: An analysis of artists' roles with Image Generative AI from Conceptual Art perspective through an interactive installation design practice

Li, Yixuan, Baciu, Dan C., Novak, Marcos, Legrady, George

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Over the past year, the emergence of advanced text-to-image Generative AI models has significantly impacted the art world, challenging traditional notions of creativity and the role of artists. This study explores how artists interact with these technologies, using a 5P model (Purpose, People, Process, Product, and Press) based on Rhodes' creativity framework to compare the artistic processes behind Conceptual Art and Image Generative AI. To exemplify this framework, a practical case study titled "Equivalence", a multi-screen interactive installation that converts users' speech input into continuously evolving paintings developed based on Stable Diffusion and NLP algorithms, was developed. Through comprehensive analysis and the case study, this work aims to broaden our understanding of artists' roles and foster a deeper appreciation for the creative aspects inherent in artwork created with Image Generative AI.

Google bakes fundamental AI productivity tools into Bard, Workspace

PCWorld

Google unveiled fundamental new improvements to its AI chatbot during the company's I/O 2023 keynote on Wednesday, with new Duet AI powers fundamentally improving its Workspace productivity apps as well. AI has been one of the unexpected breakthroughs of the past year, with nearly daily updates from tech giants big and small implementing AI. Even the U.S. government wants to use AI. Google, long the dominant player in search, has had its reputation undermined by AI models like ChatGPT and even generative AI art from Midjourney. Google has lagged behind OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing in terms of AI, launching its own Bard chatbot in February, a day before Microsoft had publicly launched Bing's AI chatbot.

12 not-so-evil AI services that can improve your life right now

PCWorld

AI is already here--and it's not just services like ChatGPT, Bing, or the upcoming Google Bard. Developers have already infused AI into products you use every day, with further improvements to come. AI can make "dumb" devices smarter, but at the cost of knowing more about you and your daily lives. AI isn't perfect, either--and our tolerance for its mistakes is evolving, just as the technology is. However, manufacturers across the board will continue to use AI in a bid to keep improving their products.

Getty Images Sues Stability AI for Generative AI Art's Alleged Copyright Violations - Voicebot.ai

#artificialintelligence

Getty is bringing its intellectual property rights infringement complaint to London's High Court of Justice. Stability AI already faces a separate major legal battle begun this week when a group of artists filed a class action lawsuit in California against it, along with Stable Diffusion platforms Midjourney and DeviantArt. Some of the billions of pictures in the LAION-5B dataset employed to train Stable Diffusion may have been scraped from the web, including Getty's servers, without their creators' awareness. Notably, Stability AI has suggested there will be an opt-out option for any artist whose work might be used to train new iterations of Stable Diffusion. Getty hasn't mentioned any financial compensation or desire to shut down Stable Diffusion in its case.

Artist receives first known US copyright registration for generative AI art

#artificialintelligence

The registration, effective September 15, applies to a comic book called Zarya of the Dawn. Kashtanova created the artwork for Zarya using Midjourney, a commercial image synthesis service. I was open how it was made and put Midjourney on the cover page. It wasn't altered in any other way. Just the way you saw it here.

Next big thing in NFT's -- Generative AI Art

#artificialintelligence

Non fungible tokens (NFT's) have taken the art world by storm. Artists and collectors are now able to transact directly sharing the savings from cutting out the intermediaries. Total market cap of NFT's have hit approximately $50 Billion in 2022 and is only expected to grow. Established digital artists are selling their prized pieces at millions of dollars. With the rise of NFT's and digital art, artificial intelligence generated art (AI art) has also seen a renewed interest.
